Remaal al-Sahra is a multinational criminal organization bent on reshaping the world by any means necessary. They believe that the world is broken, and they intend to fix it. In pursuit of this goal, they have come into conflict with X-Factor several times.

Most notably, al-Sahra's Project Portal led to the abduction of several teenage mutants, and became X-Factor's first true case. Four of the rescued teens later became X-Factor agents: Tom Sikorski, Nadia al-Razi, Walter West, and Tobias Ryder.

Remaal al-Sahra is Arabic for 'desert sand.'

Goals & Interests

Remaal al-Sahra's goals are broad and shadowy and their interests are wide-spanning, international. Beyond that, X-Factor knows very little about their true purpose.

Organization Activities

Structure

Much of Remaal al-Sahra's structure is unknown. On the practical level, they seem to work in discrete cells with little knowledge of each other and only minimal cross-over, to prevent security breaches and informational leaks that might compromise the organization's integrity. This is speculation, however, based on what little was gleaned from the mind of the al-Sahra operative planted as a mole in X-Factor's ranks. There does seem to be some indication of hierarchy and organization, but the true reach and the scale is unclear.

He has no particular criminal record, and his financials reflect little interesting. Medical records reflect a history of alcohol problems. His academic career ended with some embarrassingly bad publications about five years ago, after which he abandoned the university where he had tenure. He doesn't seem to actually be employed at El Kendi -- or anywhere.
  • Emmalina Wyss - Swiss doctor IDed in Weird Science. Widely traveled Swiss doctor with surgical expertise and some interest in theoritical medicine. Her financials are impacted by significant gambling debt, but somehow her travel records remain all over the map. She's worked at several hospitals throughout Europe and quit a job at a Japanese hospital around the end of April.
  • Cao Tan Hau - Physicist from Vietnam IDed in Weird Science. Young hotshot physicist, recently divorced, recently achieved tenure at Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo -- the youngest on tenured faculty, as of last May. No criminal record, nothing interesting in financials or medicals, but definitely on the top of his professional game.
  • Aizawa Masayoshi - Japanese neurochemist IDed in Weird Science. American-educated Japanese neurochemist who has worked for several pharmaceutical companies, but started at El Kendi almost twelve years ago. Only two years ago he moved back to Japan from another branch of the company and began work at the Japanese facility. Married, has two daughters.
  • Marjolein Verheyen - Belgian engineer IDed in Weird Science. Highly traveled Belgian mechanical engineer. Medical records reveal frequent broken bones as from high impact sports. No criminal record, no living family except a brother in Provence. Also not officially working at El Kendi.
  • Vukasin Pavlevic - Either administration or Ragnar-level in Copenhagen. Turned up by Eshana Anand while planted at El Kendi.
  • Kerrington - Career DHS, Kerrington was revealed to be a Remaal al-Sahra operative. It is unknown when he was recruited, but he seems to have responsible for Remaal al-Sahra receive a list of operatives following Michael Debauer's reveal as a mole and subsequent arrest.
  • Maria Mossman - Unknown. Used to arrange travel and expenses of Remaal al-Sahra operatives.
  • Laura Tanbourn - Formerly employed as a bartender at Chuck's, she passed on the names of two X-Factor agents. It is unknown whether she still works for Remaal al-Sahra, and if so, in what capacity.

No Longer Active

  • Carmen Munoz - As a telepathic teenager in foster care, Carmen was kidnapped by al-Sahra for use in Project Portal, where she became one of the first child soldiers trained. As an adult, she became lead on the project. She was captured by agents in Morocco and handed over to federal custody. On March 8, 2010, she was captured by the PPS and tortured to death.
  • Michael Debauer - A shapeshifter who worked as an undercover agent for al-Sahra. His last assignment: infiltrate X-Factor as Agent Nathaniel Drake. He was discovered during an internal security review and is now in federal custody.
  • Tamara Macke - While not a true agent of Remaal al-Sahra, she was willingly cooperating them during the events of In Your Shoes until told of the sorts of means that they were willing to use in the name of their ends. Probably not a plant. Right? Maybe?

Locations

  • Alternate Universe
    • The Pied Piper AU where they were training young mutants into soldiers.
    • There is some sort of time dilation effect: time seems to pass faster there than it does here. Unknown how long has passed there since last March.
    • A number of child soldiers and al-Sahra personnel are trapped on the other of the AU. An al-S priority seems to be reopening a door over there.
  • Puente Sobre, Nicaragua
    • al-S had a portal into the AU located here. XF smashed the base that they were sharing with local revolutionaries.
    • al-S came back in later and cleaned up, killing the remaining revolutionaries and mind-whammying the townsfolk.
  • Algiers, Algeria
    • They had a nice house on the outskirts of the city until we found it. Then they moved everything out.
  • Ksar-el-Kbir, Morocco
    • Lab facility hastily reconfigured into holding facility following the leak on Algiers.
    • Information left behind regarding vaccine manufacture for typhus, as well as a CDC report on typhus fever as a Category B biological weapons agent.
    • Another report in Japanese tucked behind, along with a memo reading, 'Severe manufacture delay due to Project Portal, check into N. Korea option. -- Jonassen.' Could be biological warfare; could be prevention.
  • Makurazaki, Japan
  • Xanthi, Greece
    • House where Tamara Macke was held; a base elsewhere in walking distance.
  • Hai Phong, Vietnam
  • Mombasa, Kenya
    • They are doing something there.
  • Copenhagen, Denmark
    • The al-Sahra affiliated scientists from the Makurazaki lab have been transplanted to the El-Kendi lab here.

Events

Major Events

Al-Sahra opens the Pied Piper AU by late 2007 or early 2008 at the latest. Agents Sikorski, West, al-Razi, and Rasputin, along with the Pied Piper Soldiers, are among those mutants abducted and trained to be soldiers.
The reasons for al-Sahra's presence on this mission remain unknown. The result, however, was the capture of PPS Trieu Thang.
Silvio Constantini and Military Doe make an appearance on this mission to pick up a special package to help with Project Portal: Simon Mosse, a young mutant with a quantum mutation of some sort.
Again given warning by Michael Debauer, al-Sahra captures several X-Factor agents who have tracked Carmen to the Project Portal base in Algiers. They empty the base and move the prisoners to Ksar-el-Kbir, but they are tracked by the remaining agents and Pied Piper Soldiers. The team is rescued and Carmen is apprehended.
X-Factor starts putting together the puzzles of their ongoing security leak. They discover and apprehend undercover agent Michael Debauer, known to them as Nathaniel Drake.
Remaal al-Sahra attacks X-Factor, scrambles their powers, and leaves them confused. XF fights back, rescues hostages, sweeps away with Tamara Macke. Assholes.

Minor Events

Given warning by undercover agent Michael Debauer, Carmen is able to wipe the memories of those in Darra and Nicaragua to cover her tracks.
Madrox takes a team back to Ksar-el-Kbir to check the lab.
Four X-Factor teams investigate Debauer's four most recent aliases used as part of Remaal al-Sahra.
Jean-Paul and Kelsey go to Vladivostok to search for al-Sahra intel at Dmitri's home. They learn two new names of al-Sahra agents, and Dmitri agrees to pass on further information.
In the wake of the news that the Pied Piper Soldiers have killed Carmen, and her last words were 'Tell Ragnar', two teams leave for Iceland and Stockholm to to investigate Ragnar.
Agents follow a lead from Dmitri to investigate the kidnapping of Scott Langley by Burro Shipping, and transfer into Remaal al-Sahra's custody.
Various X-Factor teams go to Makurazaki Japan where an El Kendi lab is tied to Remaal al-Sahra.
When background checks start flying on X-Factor agents, a mole in the DHS is uncovered and a spy planted at a local bar is approached to turn on Remaal al-Sahra. Why the background checks? What next?!
