Politics
AU vs. RL
We generally consider politics to be one of the aspects of our world that has gone significantly AU since Liberty Island. Before Liberty Island, we assume that they have mostly followed the same track, with minor adjustments here and there to account for the rising population of mutants (as with the Senate hearings where we see Jean and Senator Kelly debate in X1). This means that, for example, you can assume the first Gulf War, but not the second. Since the game opened in 2001, politics have been determined through roleplay and news posts.
Some real-life bits which have happened since Liberty Island, but which we incorporate, include:
- 9/11
- The war in Afghanistan
- The creation of Homeland Security
- The Patriot Act
Game Policy
Because politics are so important to our game atmosphere and plots, it is one area in which we ask players not to assume or make up tidbits without consulting staff first. While we're not politicians and surely make mistakes, we do our best to keep the 'feel' of the game world consistent in terms of what policies are passed, debated, and denied. If you have something of this nature that you'd like to use in a TP, whether it be local legislation or a lawsuit, please run it by staff first so that we can help it fit into the political landscape. Likewise, we have no problem with players who want to write newsposts that add to the 'flavor' of roleplay by telling us what's going on in other states or other countries - just run it by us first, so we can be sure it works, and we'll probably be thrilled to have it.
