Policies: Gameplay
We are a limited consent game. This means that if you play it, you reap it. In-character actions mean in-character consequences (ICA=ICC). Staff and characters with power to do so will enforce consequences on your character, such as IC jail time if they're nice like the Xavierites, or death, if they're nasty like Magneto, should they deem your actions warrant such. Thus, the limit on your consent. You still have control of your characters actions in roleplay, and we try to give you sufficient warning of the possible effects of your actions. But if those actions are such that, ICly, severe consequences are deserved, they -will- be enforced. Please use common sense and communicate when RPing anything that might have serious consequences.
Likewise, please do not assume that there will be no consequences just because no PC saw or reported an illegal activity. Where it is logical for NPCs to make police reports, give descriptions, or gossip, they will do so.
If you find yourself in a situation where you cannot agree on the IC outcome of a certain situation, you may page a staff member to act as mediator. This should be a last resort, however.
The game is generally rated R for in-scene language and adult situations, but please keep it off public channels and out of OOC rooms. Also, be aware of the general tone of the game. We are an X-Men game, and we do deal with some darker subject matters, however, we ask that you be sensitive to other players and be sure that violence and explicit situations are a part of character development through RP rather than incidental, gratuitous, and continuous.
Additionally, we ask that out of courtesy for your fellow players, you place any explicit scenes or text behind a cut-tag and post a warning, particularly in issues of abuse
- Each player may have up to 5 characters (includes OCs and FCs)
- Each player may have only 2 FCs. A third FC may be approved at Staff's discretion, contingent upon player history and alt activity.
- No two alts may be in the same faction unless approved by Staff. While we're generally flexible with this, especially when the two alts play significantly different roles within a faction, do be prepared to explain your request.
- There is a minimum four week waiting/rp period between alts. That is, you must wait four weeks after getting one character approved before you may apply for another.
Alt restrictions are ultimately at the discretion of Staff and may be limited further, should they deem the situation warrants.
- No player may have more than two FCs at one time. A third FC may be approved at Staff's discretion, contingent upon player history and alt activity.
If you would like to apply for an FC, type 'FCs' to see which FCs are currently being played. Also type 'fcroster' to see if the FC you have an interest in has extensive on-game history. - FCs should check with staff before causing permanent harm to their character, getting married, having children, etc, etc. As FCs are often taken up again by new players, drastic changes to them will require justification and should be carefully thought out. Changes supported by documented RP are most likely to be approved.
- FCs should be recognizable as the character they claim to be. Staff reserves the right to have a chat or request explanation for actions or on-going trends that seem to be out of character. We ask, however, that players refrain from criticizing anyone's portrayal of an FC personally. If you feel that an FC is consistently out of character, talk to staff.
- We ask that those players who keep a livejournal for their FC not delete their journal if they choose to drop the character, and that they give Staff the password so that future players can use the same journal.
- We encourage, but do not require, FCs to keep a livejournal and post logs of RP regularly, so that in the event that another player picks up the character in the future, they will have a clear record of the on-game history.
In general, players are free to NPC as they choose and feel appropriate, and we expect that players will use them responsibly.
Please be careful not to use NPCs to avoid ICCs for your character or to make your character look better. Don't make everyone's favorite bartender mouth off to Magneto just because you thought it'd be funny or the NYPD appear incompetent just so you can get off with illegal activity. Likewise, don't make a habit of beating up blundering NPCs to show off your awesome fighting skills.
In addition, please don't pose the reaction or opinions of a large group of NPCs without consulting staff.
Also keep in mind that, while we don't mind killing off NPCs in RP, we like deaths to be related to plot and story - to mean something. While PC deaths naturally have a greater impact on the PCs on the game, keep in mind that every NPC death has the same result to the NPC population, and even a few can add up to change the atmosphere of New York in a short time. When in doubt, as always, talk to staff!
We have a list of common XMM NPCs here.
Do not spoof another character in roleplay unless that player has given you consent to do so. In some instances, Staff may grant this consent if the character's presence is unavoidable and the player is not available. In general we prefer to assume characters in the background or to work around them entirely where possible.
In addition, do not attribute actions to or spoof FCs who are not currently PC without Staff approval.
