The King and Queen of the Inner Circle are the strongest and most cunning of the ranks; they are powerful, and they are the alphas. Their duties are to rule, and King and Queen are supposed to work in unison toward that purpose. They form the goals of the Inner Circle, and it is to their subordinates to carry them out. The King and Queen are where the Hellfire Club and the Inner Circle intersect; they are often the public face of the Inner Circle. |

The Bishop is the advisor. Often, the Bishop is someone publicly aligned with the King or Queen, friend or lover. Of the pieces, the Bishop works closet with the Monarchs, and it requires a strong bond of trust. |

The Knight is the left hand, as the Bishop is the right, and serves as assassin and spy for their Monarch. Their role may not even be known by the Bishop and Rook, and they are usually not a member of the Club. He is the secret weapon of the Monarchs. |

The Rook is chief among the pawns, serving as interface for pawns and Monarchs. The pawns might not know any other member of the Inner Circle but the Rook. The security forces are largely pawns, and the Rook has charge of the Monarchs' protection. |

Pawns are the lowest of the ranks. They are aware of their status and of the Inner Circle. It is but an introductory step; to be a pawn is to be a part, to have the fealty that goes both ways, but it is no promise of power. Those few of appropriate talent and ambition can move within the ranks of the pawns, gaining favor and power, and perhaps a titled position. They are subordinate to all the other pieces. |
