Civil Servants
It takes thousands of people to keep a city like New York running and safe. In addition to government and judiciary officials, some of the most visible examples of the pledge to the health and safety of New York’s citizen are the NYPD and FDNY.
NYPD
New York's Finest
The New York Police Department is one of the largest, most modernized, and most visible in the nation, and as such, they have high ethical standards, and equally high levels of corruption within their ranks. Like most large police forces, they have divided the city into numerous precincts based upon geography and population. The investigative portion of the department is broken down into several specialized divisions, including Homicide, Sex Crimes, and Mutant Affairs.
The force currently employs nearly 40,000 men and women, the majority of which are uniformed patrol officers that navigate their beats around the city in patrol cars or on foot. The NYPD also employs a number of plainclothes detectives who are responsible for investigating crimes in the wake of the preliminary investigation conducted by the uniformed officer that is the first to arrive at the scene.
FDNY
New York's Bravest
The Fire Department of New York has the responsibility for protecting the citizens and property of New York City's five boroughs from fires and fire hazards, providing emergency medical services, technical rescue as well as providing first response to biological, chemical and radioactive hazards.
The Fire Department of New York is the largest municipal fire department in the United States with approximately 11,400 uniformed officers and firefighters. It faces an extraordinarily varied challenge. In addition to responding to building types that range from wood-frame single family homes to high-rise structures, there are the many bridges and tunnels as well as the largest subway system in the United States.
