FAQs

Potential Players FAQ

What is a MOO?

A MOO is a text-based, real-time roleplaying game similar to MUSHes, MUCKs, and MUDs. MOO refers to the type of code we run on. One big difference for many players who've RPed in other formats is adjusting to the real-time aspect. Because we RP in a 'chat'-like format, scenes and plotlines move much faster than on many journal or forum-based RP games.

What is 'movieverse'?

'Movieverse' means that we play in the universe set out in the X-Men movies. Simple, but true! This comes out a lot in history and atmosphere. X1 is the only movie in our history, and we take all events of that movie to be a part of the game. Our take on movieverse emphasizes a more realistic feel, especially in terms of character reactions, consequences, and consistency. We also tend to be lower-powered than comicverse games and to have less combat-based RP. For a fuller explanation, check out our theme page.

What's with all the Shakespeare?

We love the bard, what can we say?

No, really! Because New York is so huge and we prefer not to map it all out, we have rooms called 'stages' – spaces that can serve as any location you like. Keeping all the OOC areas in one theme makes it easy to tell the OOC areas and keeps us from calling you 'one Guest two Guest red Guest blue Guest'.

What movies are part of the game history?

Just X1 – although we steal bits and pieces from both X2 and the comics when it suits us. The game started in the years between X1 and X2, and both of them have the movieverse 'feel' that we love.

We do not acknowledge the existence of any other X-Men movies.

How can I apply for a character?

Log onto the game by connecting as a guest and type 'help apply'. All the instructions and the entire application are listed there.

How can I get help with my application or concept?

The best way is to log on as a guest and talk to Staff. You ask questions and get help from Staff by talking on the =Guests channel (use 'g <message>' to talk), and you can talk to other players on the Newbies channel ('nb <message>'). You can also browse our sample applications, our tips, and our overdone and restricted lists, post in our forum, or visit our LJs for more ideas.

How long does it take to get approved?

It depends on the application (and, we admit, our own level of busy!). Generally, you can expect a reply from us, either as an approval or asking for some adjustments or clarification, in no more than three days. Feel free to log on and check up on the status, or chat at us, if you want!

What characters do you need? What's overdone?

We usually have a good balance of RP in all areas, but you can always check out the Classifieds on the forum to see if anyone has posted a request lately, or post your own thread asking if anyone has something they'd like to see more of. In particular, check out the Wanted: Characters thread. We don't keep a list of 'underdone' things (although Staff might have some suggestions), but we do have an 'overdone' list so you can see what the game's heavy on at the moment.

Can I play an FC who was in the comics, but not in the movies?

Absolutely! We just ask that you keep in mind that some history, powers, and other aspects might need to be adjusted a bit to fit the movieverse. If you're unsure how to do this, log on and give Staff a shout.

What FCs can I apply for?

Mostly, as long as they are a part of the X-Men universe you can apply them. We do have some restrictions and prohibited concepts, and occasionally someone will ask about a character who is so 'comic' that they don't fit well into our game - Cable, for example, is a small child on game, and X-23's powers and history don't fit our theme. If you're ever unsure, log on and ask Staff.

Can I play an FC who's been played before?

Yes! We love for people to pick up FCs who've already existed on game. For some FCs, you can type 'fcroster' on game to get some basic information on their on-game history. For others, especially characters who never established extensive on-game history, we give new players a pretty free hand in adjusting things to make the character their own.

If you want to pick up an FC who's already had a player, we encourage you to talk to Staff to get more information. Checking to see if they have an old LJ listed can also be a good place to start.

What factions do you have?

XMM has three major factions: Xavier's School, the Hellfire Club, and Citizens. We also have several smaller groups called 'organizations,' such as the X-Men and Emerson University. While we have had the Brotherhood of Mutants and Friends of Humanity on game in the past, they no longer exist. The Friends are in existence ICly, while the Brotherhood is currently disbanded. Visit their webpages for more information.

How do I see who's in a faction or organization?

On game, type '@areas' to see a list of the factions and organizations and their aliases. You can use 'flist <alias>' to see a list of everyone in that faction.

Can I apply directly into a faction or organization?

Sometimes, depending on the circumstances and the faction or organization in question. Most characters start as citizens, and our policy game-wide is that characters must RP their way into a faction. There are some exceptions, however, such as FC characters who already have an established history in a faction or characters created in response to an ad or TP.

Some factions and organizations do not require you to RP your way in. These are Emerson University, Columbia University, Law Enforcement, and with prior approval, the Hellfire Club (but not usually the Inner Circle) and Xavier's School (as a new student). You can also let us know that you're interested in aiming in a certain direction on your application, and you can visit the faction pages for more information about how to join a specific faction.

Where can I read up on recent events or see logs?

We try to keep our timelines up to date within a month or two, and we note all major events. You can also read our IC news posts on livejournal for the most recent stuff, or check out character livejournals for logs and current RPish goodness.

Do you use a stat or skill system?

Nope. On XMM, we are limited consent and place a heavy emphasis on cooperative roleplay. We don't have a lot of combat, but when we do we rely on players to use their good judgment to create fun RP for everyone involved. Check out our policies on gameplay for more information.
