Citizens

Citizens are those characters on the game who are not associated with any of the usual factions like Xavier’s or the Hellfire Club. Every character starts out as a citizen unless the player has made special arrangements with staff. Citizens can be (and are) both mutants and norms, OCs and FCs.

Playing a citizen has some distinct advantages. They often have a broader range of play because they aren’t tied into a factional loyalty that requires them to obey certain laws, to have certain loyalties, or to view other characters in a certain way simply because of who they work for. They don’t have to follow orders. They have the opportunity to create ties to multiple factions without actually joining, to have friends across the board, and to develop in freer forms. Essentially, citizens can live where they like, speak to who they like, believe whatever they like, and hold whatever job they like. And this can all change according to circumstance.

On the other hand, citizens who are less careful may find themselves on the wrong side of a powerful figure without any sort of protector. This, too, can lead to interesting avenues of play.

There are citizen ‘groups’ that offer a sort of community or excuse for interaction beyond coincidence. Currently, we have a good population of characters in ‘blue-collar’ jobs, civil servant positions such as the NYPD and FDNY, and those who are involved in business and politics.

Creating a character or angling a character toward one of these loose ‘groups’ can provide RP beyond the coincidental and help build relationships. Sometimes (as when, for example, creating an NYPD character), you may want to talk to the players of existing characters to see what’s been established already, and what you can build on. If you’re interested in hooking into a group or finding a niche for a new character, your best bet is to talk to the appstaff, who can further direct you. Asking on the XMM forum is also a great way to get player input and suggestions or to find others who are willing to be connected to your character, both during the application process and after.
