Game Atmosphere

XMM is a character-driven and plot-intensive text-based roleplaying game. This means that while we enjoy chaos and combat, we prefer to use it as a way to develop our characters, to further a plot, or to complicate a scenario. Random acts of violence are generally frowned upon unless they're serving some other purpose. We prize complex, complicated characters, long-ranging plots and politicking, and intricate webs of IC connections between characters.

On XMM, interesting is more important than powerful. While the two are certainly not mutually exclusive, it is sometimes tempting to define a character by what she can do with her powers. In doing that, players often miss out on the fun that can be had from the 'weaknesses' of character - whether that be trying to cope with having a useless mutant power, horrible social skills, a phobia of birds, bad taste in men, or just really bad BO. Trying to work around these weaknesses - or learning to cope with them - can be a blast, especially on a game where character and story is the key.

XMM encourages character development and personal plots. This is why we enforce ICA=ICC (IC actions lead to IC consequences) in roleplay and why we strongly support cause and effect. Many players use journals to explore how an event has affected their character. We highly encourage you to give some thought into how the world around him is affecting your character from day to day. Use RP'ed events to shape your character and watch them grow over the months (or the years) and try answering questions such as "Who would your character talk to, what would they do, and how would they handle it? How are the current events of the game affecting them? What do they think about the politics, the latest news clip, or the latest trends?" The everyday relationships of life, both good and bad, often lead to something very fun to play, and IC connections sometimes meet up in unexpected ways.

XMM is a player-driven game. This means that while there are occasional faction- or game-wide TPs, players are by and large expected to make their own RP, from tiny scenes to big TPs. Players are highly encouraged to contact staff if they have something they'd like to see happen.
